Atlas of Gynecologic Cytology

Atlas of Gynecologic Cytology
This atlas is an invaluable aid for pathologists and trainees who have worked with conventional smear cytology but need to familiarize themselves with the appearance seen in liquid-based cytology, which has largely replaced conventional smears for cervical screening. It includes state of the art information on normal pap smears, normal glandular constituents, smear patterns, and inflammation, reactive changes and repair. It also includes pathological changes, such as typical and atypical squamous cell abnormalities, high-grade intraepithelial lesions, and glandular cell abnormalities. It is useful guide for practitioners who need a quick reference on cytological specimens.

Pap smear - Pap smear (pap is an abbreviation for papanicolaou), as it is currently known (smear test in some countries), is an invention of Dr. Georgios Papanikolaou (1883-1962), an American of Greek birth, the father of cytopathology.

Colposcopic biopsy - A colposcopic biopsy is a gynecologic procedure that typically is used to evaluate a patient who has had an abnormal pap smear. The colposcope is actually a close-focusing telescope that allows the physician to see in detail abnormal areas on the cervix of the uterus, so that a good representation of the abnormal area can be removed and sent to the pathologist.

Cytopathology - Cytopathology is a branch of pathology that studies and diagnoses diseases on the cellular level. The most common use of cytopathology is the Pap smear, used to detect cervical cancer at an early treatable stage.

Pap (food) - Pap a traditional porridge made from mielie-meal (ground maize or other grain), is a staple food of the Bantu inhabitants of South Africa(the Dutch word "pap" simply means "porridge"or gruel"). Many traditional South African dishes include pap, such as smooth maize meal porridge (also called slap pap), and crumbly "phutu" (pronounced "poo-too") pap.
